Eco Skola Elections

During the first weeks of this scholastic year we have held the elections for the Ecoskola council. Pupils from year 3 till year 6 were encouraged to contest for the elections and we had a very good turnover of contenders. The voting was done online using the Ilearn voting system. Each class teacher inputted the names of the pupils who contested. A big thanks goes to Miss Giles, our IT support teacher, for her precious help in coordinating the system.

The pupils promoted themselves to gain votes from their peers by preparing charts from recycled material and by doing speeches in front of the whole class. With this initiative pupils had the opportunity to address a large number of people and enhance their creativity on what they can do to improve their school.

In order to ensure that all eligible pupils had their chance to vote, the voting process was spread over 2 days. Once the voting processes was complete, the pupil with the highest votes from each class was determined. These pupils are going to represent their classmates and all the school during the Ecoskola council meetings. These meetings are going to be held every fourth night during the midday break.

The names of the students who were elected on the Ecoskola council are:

Spring in Ms Sylvana’s Class

Ms.Sylvana’s class kg 2.3 explored garden this month. Since it is spring, the theme that kids were exploring in class was gardening. They did this in many different ways. They sow there seeds, they had their own plant in class and in the kindergarten yard to take care and water.  They had hands on experience daily in class, playing and creating in their garden corner. They used potato to create their Mr. Potato head, and practiced the cutting skill exercise creating other craft. They also enjoyed rhyming and dancing an action rhyme “spring is here,” they followed and enjoyed also stories about spring. This all helps to instill in our pupils love for nature and respect. Our pupils went also on an outing to the Kitchen Garden San Anton. They could link what they learned in class to reality.

GreenMT

GreenMt paid a visit to our school (watch video here) and spoke to all the children at our school about the importance of the 5 R’s. They also spoke to us about a new initiative that GreenMt is starting as from the 1st Of April. Students are encouraged to collect plastic and paper and bring them along to school. At the end of the competition this will be weighed and the school who collects the largest ammount of material will win. Many schools are partecipating, so starts bringing your paper and plastic to school and lets RECYCLE

Green Dot Award

Our School Won the Green Dot award, an award created our College Principal. This  will be awarded every year to the school within the College with the most initiatives towards the environment. Our School won the first award and we were given a trophy to keep for one Year  and a plaque which will be displayed in a prominent place. Well done to all.

Green Pak

Our school participated for the Second year running in the GreenPak initiative Irricikla għall-Istrina. Our students did a wonderful job and eagerly brought loads of plastic cap to school. Malek, a student at our school brought loads and loads of caps, and with his help along with other students at St Venera, we managed to collect a staggering 1161,5kg of plastic caps – 387,167 caps in all. This was worked out per capita for a total of 2.45kg per student or 815 caps per student. Our School came third from all the participating schools. GreenPak gave money to Istrina for every Kg collected. Through this Initiative, our school helped those in need.

GreenPak

L-iskola tagħna ipparteċipat fi proġett ieħor ippreparat mill-Greenpak. L-iskola tagħna flimkien ma’ xi skejjel oħra ħadmu biex jiġbru kemm jistgħu materjal riċiklabbli. Dawn inġabru f’boroż apposta. Għal bosta ġimgħat it-tfal ġabu materjal mid-dar. It-tfal kollha urew impenn u stinkaw kemm felħu. Waslet il-ġurnata fejn permezz ta’ trakk speċjali, membri mill-Greenpak ġew biex jiżnu l-materjal kollu li ġbarna. Il-munzell  li rnexxielna niġbru kien kbir mhux ħażin. Prosit tal-impenn li għal darb’ oħra wrejtu u j’Alla din l-inizjattiva tkompli ssaħħaħ fikom l-importanza illi nirriċiklaw l-iskart u nibżgħu għall-ambjent ta’ madwarna.

Impjant tar-riċiklaġġ

L-Iskola tagħna qed turi impenn qawwi lejn ambjent aħjar. Minbarra illi aħna eko-skola, nieħdu bosta inizjattivi u nidħlu f’bosta proġetti marbuta mal-ħarsien tal-ambjent. Il-kumpanija Green Pak toħloq bosta proġetti u inizjattivi – fosthom il-ġbir tat-tappijiet tal-plastik u l-ġbir ta’ skart riċiklabbli mill-iskola. F’dawn iż-żewġ proġetti, l-iskola uriet impenn sod. Għal dan il-għan, l-istudenti tal-Kunsill u l-Kunsill ta’ Eko-Skola  ngħataw sorpriża ħelwa meta flimkien ma’ żewġ għalliema marru f’impjant tar-riċiklaġġ fl-Imqabba. Hemmhekk daru mal-post waqt illi saru jafu pass pass x’jiġri mill-karti u mill- plastik illi aħna narmu. Kienet esperjenza interessanti għal kull min mar. Prosit u j’Alla dan l-impenn jibqa’ tul ħajjitkom kollha.

Riciklagg tal-ilma tax-Xita

Il-Principal tal-Kullegg Dr Frank Fabri, nieda progett li ser jinfirex mal-kumplament tal-iskejjel tal-kullegg Santa Tereza. Dan il-progett jahseb biex l-ilma tax-xita jibda jinhazen u jintuza. L-ilma tax-xita li ser jaqa’ fuq il-bejt tal-iskola primarja  ta’ Santa Venera ser jibda jigabar go tank li fih filtri biex inaddaf l-ilma. Dan l-ilma imbghad jghaddi ghal go tank izghar b’filters apposta biex ikompli jiffiltra l-ilma minn hmieg u zrar. Dan l-ilma imbghad jghaddi ghal bore hole imhaffra apposta. L-ilma jibda jiskula bil-mod il-mod fil-blat sakemm isib ruhu fil-water table madwar 40 sena ohra. Minn hawn imbghad inkunu nistghu intellghu dan l-ilma halli jintuza. Dan huwa progett ambizjuz li ahna kburin li beda fl-iskola primarja Santa Venera.

Walking Bus

Matul din il-gimgha li ghaddiet l-iskola primarja Santa Venera organizzat Walking Bus. Wara li sar studju mill-istudenti tal-Kunsill tal-iskola dwar liema mezz ta trasport juzaw l-istudenti biex jigu l-iskola indunaw li madwar 150 tifel u tifla jigu l-iskola permezz tal-karozzi privati. Ghalhekk harget l-ideja li tigi organizzata din il-walking bus. Ir-rotot gew mahluqa apposta biex jigu agevolati dawn l-istudenti. Genituri hadu hsieb li jmexxu r-rotot u genituri ohrajn hadu hsieb jigbru l-basktijiet tal-iskola tat-tfal, halli dawn ikunu jistghu jimxu minghajr toqol. F’idejhom l-istudenti garrew kartelluni favur l-ambjent. Matul ir-rottot kien hemm Puluzija u Wardens halli jikkontrollaw it-traffiku. It-tfal kienu kollha lebsin bibs apposta. Din il-Walking Bus kienet parti minn progett HSBC-EC Climate Initiative project li fih l-iskola taghna qed tippartecipa.
